For individuals who are 70 1/2 or older, the IRS will allow you to donate directly from your IRA (not 401K account) to a charitable organization, such as Livingston County Catholic Charities, during 2011.  If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can avoid paying taxes on your contribution by directing your IRA to send money directly to the charitable organization of your choice.  The donation does count, though, as part of your IRA withdrawl for the year--up to $100,000.  It's important to consult with your IRA and tax or financial advisor for specific details and further explanation.
